What are the Submerged Minds?

The Submerged Minds inhabit the deepest, murkiest realm known to the creatures of this Oracle. They are transitional creatures, lying between ourselves and the cosmic background hiss our spirits are pulled from. They do not speak a language anyone in Maskworld understands, in fact they have not been seen to speak at all, except through intermediaries. They are deep-sea creatures, with a body like an eel’s or an anglerfish, and a face like the Inner Mask’s, inverted. Other names for them include Submerged Thought, Sunken Mind, Submerged Names. There is a mysterious link between Submerged Minds and the Liberated Voices, but none is sure quite what the kinship is. They are described as beautiful and dangerous and unknowable.

The Inner Mask has occasionally become captivated by these creatures too, though it rarely sees them. The Submerged Minds have joys of their own, and are quite distant and disconnected from the other creatures in Maskworld. They represent the deepest, oldest part of our mind, and also our “highest,” most spiritual state of mind, the mind closest to the creator, and also the mind closest to nature. Words are both too new for the Submerged Minds to use, and too outdated. It experiences time in a way totally disconnected from how time works in Maskworld and elsewhere, and it also experiences the joys and sorrows of those other worlds as minutia in a vast, unending span of events. The Submerged Minds are also the creature most familiar with, and comfortable in, the void.
