How to Use this Deck

The author suggests going through this Book of Meanings in order to first get an idea for what kinds of concepts these cards reflect, as a way to get familiar with the project. If that is too intimidating a task, one can start by drawing cards in ways like those suggested below. It can be helpful to read the introductions at the beginning of this book, and the introductions at the beginning of each of the Minor Arcana, before one dives in.

Single Card Draw

A single card draw is simple and a good way to get started with this deck, or with divination in general. To start, one asks a question. The question can be anything that currently puzzles you in life. To make things simpler, one can consider framing the question like this: “what should my attitude be, or what should I consider, with regards this problem…?” Repeat this question to yourself as you shuffle the deck. When you have shuffled to your satisfaction and are ready for an answer, draw a card. You can begin by looking at the scene depicted in the card and, if you like, meditate on its meaning on your own before reading the meaning in this book. This deck can be used intuitively if one prefers. One can do this practice every day, in order to gain an increasing knowledge of this oracle deck. Don’t rush to “memorize” the deck at once, take your time to build your relationship with this deck.

Three Card Draw

The Three Card Draw offers a little more insight than a single card draw. First, shuffle the deck and focus on the question that you have in mind. You will draw three cards, the first card represents the past, the circumstances led up to this moment. The second card you draw is the present, summing up the current situation. The third card is the future, and indicates where things are headed. This will offer a more in-depth reading than a single card pull.

Together with a Tarot Deck

One can also use this deck in conjunction with a Tarot deck. Those who are adept at Tarot might first start by doing a full Tarot spread, and then drawing one or three additional cards from The Tarot of the Inner Mask Oracle, to supplement the message of the Tarot cards.

One method is to first draw one Oracle card, representing the querent. Next, draw three Tarot cards representing past present and future. As one progresses through the reading, draw an Oracle card whenever something seems unclear, or if more information is needed. There are numerous ways to combine oracle decks and Tarot decks. One might see how the two decks feel together, whether the two decks “chime” with each other, before deciding on a favorite way to combine them.

Tarot-Style Spreads

Because this deck is structured somewhat similarly to Tarot, this deck can function in the form of a Tarot layout. There are many to choose from, here are a few common ones. One can use the three card pull described above, or one can choose a more elaborate spread such as the Tree of Life, or The Spiritual Guidance Spread.

Inner Mask Specific Spreads (“Constellations”)

There are five spreads designed specifically for The Tarot of the Inner Mask Oracle, and they are described in detail in the back of this book. These spreads are described as “constellations,” and they describe ways to lay down cards from the Inner Mask Oracle that will guide the querent to in-depth readings on their situation and the state of their personal quest. These constellations appeared to the deck’s artist in a dream, and the querent is encouraged to use intuition when following them.
