What are the Liberated Voices?

The Liberated Voices are the third significant character in Maskworld. They resemble masks with wings, and are often seen jubilantly flying over obstacles that block the Inner Mask and Empty Moon. There are various rumors about where they come from and how they come to be. Some say they emerge whenever wanderers come to the ends of their quests, breaking free from the limits of those bodies, chasing only wild abandon from there on out. Others say they are masks discarded by actors, now free to inhabit themselves fully beyond anything that could be rehearsed. The Empty Moon has another theory.

The Inner Mask is often found staring for long periods at the Liberated Voices. Their freedom and joyfulness make the Inner Mask envious: they always seem to be having more fun. The Inner Mask craves connection with the Voices, dreams of joining them, and sometimes distracted from its own quest as it does so. The Liberated Voices speak a mysterious language we have yet to understand, made not of words but something on a higher frequency. If we could understand them, they would tell us things are not always perfect where they are, that we should stop romanticizing them and that their lives should not be mistaken as the ultimate goal of everyone. They represent just one of many ways of being whole, complete, and free.
