What is the Empty Moon?

The Empty Moon is a solitary figure that dwells not in Maskworld, but in a realm just beneath it; a deeper part of the subconscious. The Empty Moon is a creature with a crescent moon for a head, who feels a strong connection with the Inner Mask, and longs to make the Inner Mask aware, so they can be joined together. The Empty Moon has, for many reasons, been banished to the hidden world of Shadow, and represents truths we don’t accept or wish included in the world or ourselves.

The Empty Moon knows that it is part of the Inner Mask, and that the Inner Mask and Empty Moon can never be complete without each other. However, the Inner Mask is utterly unaware of the Empty Moon and its many attempts to communicate, and infiltrate Maskworld. The Empty Moon is a reminder that our “dark side” is part of us as well, although we tend to ignore or suppress it, and that its wisdom is valuable. While the Inner Mask is driven to seek answers to the mystery of its strange shape, the Empty Moon seeks to fill its emptiness, to find that which is missing from itself and get it back.

Like many moons, the Empty Moon has its phases. Its time in the scope of the Oracle is one of its phases, and its phases are linked with its own quest for enlightenment, wholeness and the feeling of being complete. In the course of the Oracle, the Empty Moon’s coming phases will be predicted, and will begin to occur. We won’t see it attain fullness in the course of this deck, but we know its on a journey of its own to a kind of completion that is its own.
