Indeed in Vaudevea they take their Categories to heart-- I keep seeing in my mind this image of a girl running out into the rain, I know it's FeyVi because she has been going through alot, and tonight's the night when her world has finally come down around her. The elders have told her FeyVi's a good, solid Vaudevean name and they don't see why she is rejecting it with all her questions, all her puny excuses. Some societies punish their children for asking certain questions, Vaudevea punishes its children for having the wrong thoughts. She has no desire that she knows of to defy the Categories, but what they're upset with her about are the desires she isn't conscious of. They're thinking of taking everything away from her and she has never known how to properly protect against the powerful, she has never spoken the same language as them, she has never known the world from their perspective. Out into the rain she runs, because she can't control what's going on, no one thinks anything of her anymore, they look at her and see someone with no guiding lights. She yells at the raining world that she didn't ask for this, to be who she is, someone not good enough, not right in any way- the wrong one. She freaks out that she can't change fast enough, well enough, hard enough- she just wants everything to be over, because its over already, this is just the after-math of everything. In the rain, an old friend says "hello."
